We now live in a time when cosmetic treatments have become more effective, more attainable, and less invasive. Enter cryolipolysis, a procedure developed by Harvard scientists that helps patients to lose their fat without any surgery at all. Many know this procedure as CoolSculpting, which has become the hottest (ironically) fat reducing procedure in the world.
Cryolipolysis is based on the finding that when fat is frozen, the fat cells respond by dying through a process known as apoptosis. Believe it or not, the idea was spawned from the observation that children who sucked on popsicles had less cheek fat. This led to researchers at Harvard to elucidate the mechanism of this phenomenon. Fast forward a bit, and the CoolSculpting treatment was born. This treatment allows patients to undergo a short procedure where their fat is frozen without any surgery whatsoever. So how does CoolSculpting work? According to Dr. Greene, an applicator is placed on the area of the fat bulge, which is then subjected to the cooling process for one hour.
